Gary Tilley wins the Prime Minister’s Teaching Award K-6 (continued)
always contributed greatly. I must thank Director Kim Mackay
and Dr Rebecca Johnson from the Australian Museum,
Catherine Beehag and her marvellous Science Engagement
Team, Dr Jodi Rowley, Ross Pogson, Sally Reader and many
others for their great assistance. The Sydney Institute of Marine
Sciences (SIMS) and the Sydney Aquarium were also keen to
support us develop programs and displays.
“During this time I began publishing about the work we were
doing at school and presenting at Conferences. Professor
Keith Skamp included sections on Seaforth P.S. in the 5th
edition of his book “Teaching Primary Science Constructively.
“I am most indebted to the NSW Science Teachers’ Association
(STANSW) for nominating me to be the NSW Finalist for
the BHP Billiton Prize, and in particular George Pinniger
(Editor of SEN) for his encouragement to publish. The
Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) nominated
me for a Japan Exchange Tour, supporting me with training
opportunities. I especially mention its CEO Vic Dobos for his
great encouragement.
“I strongly urge all primary teachers to become involved in
their State Association! You can both enjoy the benefits and
return them in kind as you become more experienced.
“I believe that making contacts and building relationships
in the world of science is really useful if teachers wish their
teaching to be more successful. Let parents know about your
passion for science and the possibilities for their children, as
such collaboration is the key to going beyond the ordinary.
Passion for science is contagious, and learning in every subject
will be enhanced by science.”
Gary’s passion for Science, and collaborative methods were
recognised by Professor Joanne Mulligan of Macquarie
University, who seconded him to the ‘Opening Real Science’
project funded by the Federal Government This initiative aims
to drive a major improvement in the quality of mathematics
and science education and outcomes in Australia by engaging
pre- and in-service teachers in real science. Collaboration
between teacher educators, scientists and mathematicians
aims to deliver innovative resources to equip school teachers
to inspire and motivate students through authentic, inquirybased learning.
