Monash is one of the top universities in the world, and having a chance to study at one of its campuses was a dream come true. I have always been interested in the biological sciences so studying it for my undergraduate course, and at a world-renowned university too, was an opportunity that was too good to miss. Later, I continued with my PhD because I was very keen to be in the world of academia and research.
My ultimate career goal is to make a significant, positive difference in people’ s lives. I’ d like to be remembered as someone who brought about a positive change in the life of at least one person.”
DR FAIZAL HAMID
Bachelor of Science( majoring in Biotechnology) Doctor of Philosophy Vice President( Bio-based Accelerator Program), Bioeconomy Corporation
At Bioeconomy Corporation, Faizal is responsible for leading strategic initiatives that foster the growth of bio-based businesses through specialised facilitation and developmental support. The program plays a crucial role in aligning industry needs with governmental policies to ensure that biotechnology companies can scale effectively within the national bioeconomy ecosystem.
Faizal’ s research at Monash was on antimicrobial compounds from five species of rhizomes commonly used in traditional Malaysian medicines. Cavacrol and 4-vinylguaiacol, the two active ingredients isolated from Curcuma zedoaria( white ginger) with the highest antimicrobial activity, have many potential real-world applications, especially in the food industry and cosmetics.
