Siblings Find Path to
Success at Stevenson
Abbie Wright ’11 and Dan Waters ’15
Stevenson students benefit from a strong
career focus, dedicated faculty and staff, and
the real life experience that professors bring
into the classroom. The Waters siblings show
how Stevenson’s programs prepare students
for successful careers.
Abbie, a graduate of the elementary education
major, is now a second-grade teacher with
Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland.
While at Stevenson, Abbie participated
in campus club and organizations as well
as honor societies and residence life. As
a teacher candidate, Abbie completed
placement in fourth-, fifth-, and sixth- grade
classrooms where she gained professional
teaching experience. “My professors bent over
backward to make sure that I was prepared
to be on my own in my profession. They were
my role models and worked hard to see every
student succeed. They ensured that we were
up to date with the latest technology and news
in the teaching field,” explains Abbie.
As a business administration major, Dan
is also taking advantage of Stevenson’s
career focus to prepare for a bright future.
Throughout his time at Stevenson, he has
interned with two corporations, Allegis Group,
Inc. as a global procurement intern and at
Element Fleet Management working in the
strategic consulting department. Both of these
internships gave him the opportunity to put
what he has learned in the classroom into
use in the workplace. “This was the greatest
4
opportunity I could have asked for,” he
says. “It allowed me to network, use what
I learned at Stevenson, and learn a great
deal about the corporate and working
world.”
Dan realizes that earning a college degree
is not only about what you do inside the
classroom. “All of the experiences that I
chose have given me countless real-life
and transferable skills that boost my appeal
to a prospective employer. These parts of
college external to the classroom—are
—
what have helped me find and prepare for
what I want to do.” During his time as a
SU student Dan has held three on-campus
jobs, participated in a varsity sport, and
joined multiple clubs and organizations.
“My college years have demonstrated to
me that the students who have the drive
to learn more and do more than what’s
expected in the classroom can improve
their chances of getting a good job out of
school.”
After graduation, Dan is considering
pursuing a career as a business analyst or
working for a corporation in a procurement
role. “Although these two options are
interesting to me, I plan to keep my options
open. Stevenson has prepared me by not
letting me limit my abilities. Stevenson’s
well-rounded education has prepared me
to feel confident entering any career in
business.”
