In terms of what subject’s universities want at GCSE, it basically doesn't matter. They will care about what letter grades you get, not what subjects they are in; the only subjects they will care about specifically are those which are core (English and Maths, basically; especially since these are not required choices at A Level). At A Level, on the other hand, the specific subjects you choose will often be important and relevant to what university courses you are able to apply for. It is important to reflect on possible A Level choices, though: although students with a very impressive track record at GCSE can make a case to take up an A Level subject not studied before, there is no automatic right to do so. If you think you want to study it at A Level, you really ought to take it now. Whatever you choose, whether adopting a generalist or specialist approach you must be fully committed to all subjects you select. At Key Stage 4, you will be expected to be much more selftasking, hard-working, and consistent than in Years 7-9. These are YOUR options: YOU choose them. Be sure you only choose things you'll be willing to work hard, independently, to succeed in. In terms of discussing these options, you will have a chance to see the Work Experience Coordinator, at least once in the year to share your thoughts and seek some guidance; you will also have a number of opportunities in PSHE throughout the year to reflect on these choices. Remember to use the Careers resources in the library and the schools VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) to help too. Good luck choosing! Mr Drennan Head of Careers
