German – Edexcel – 2GN01 Course Outline The key topics covered for the Listening and Reading examinations are: out and about; customer service and transactions; personal information and future plans, education and work. In addition students will prepare one or more topics for their Speaking and Writing Controlled Conditions Assessments. The objectives of the course are to understand German in a variety of contexts, to build knowledge of German vocabulary and grammatical structures, to develop transferable language-learning skills, to be able to communicate effectively in German and to have an awareness and understanding of countries and communities where German is spoken. Skills that will be developed will be to listen to and understand spoken German in a range of contexts and a variety of styles and to communicate in speech for a variety of purposes. Students also learn to read and respond to different types of written language as well as to learn to communicate in writing for a variety of purposes. Students understand and apply a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures and to develop language learning and communication skills which can be applied broadly. Course Details Unit Unit Unit Unit 1 2 3 4 – – – – Listening and Understanding in German (20% of total GCSE) Speaking in German (30% of total GCSE) Reading and Understanding in German (20% of total GCSE) Writing in German (30% of total GCSE) Assessment Criteria Unit 1 Listening and understanding: One terminal examination paper, worth 20% of the GCSE. Unit 2 Speaking: Two controlled conditions speaking assessments which can be undertaken at any time during the course prior to the deadline selected by the Edexcel for the submission of marks. Each Speaking assessment is worth 15% of the GCSE, therefore the Speaking component is worth a total of 30% of the GCSE. Unit 3 Reading and understanding: One terminal examination paper. Unit 4 Writing: Internally assessed in controlled conditions. Students are expected to produce two essays of at least 200 words. Each of these must be undertaken in controlled conditions in a single assessment session. Each Writing assessment is worth 15% of the GCSE, therefore the Writing component is worth a total of 30% of the GCSE.
