Additional Science – Edexcel – 2SA01
Course Outline
The Additional Science course consists of equally weighted units in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The Edexcel Science suite of courses encourages students to be inspired, motivated and challenged
by following a broad, coherent, practical satisfying and worthwhile course of study. It provides
insight into and experience of how science works, stimulating students’ curiosity and encouraging
them to engage with science in their everyday lives and to make informed choices about further
study and career choices.
Skills that are developed fall into four main areas: Knowledge and Understanding (including science
as an evidence based discipline, the collaborative nature of science, how scientific theories develop
and the limitations of science), Practical Skills (planning, obtaining and presenting evidence,
interpreting data, evaluating a method), How Science Works (data, evidence, theories and
explanations, practical and enquiry skills, communication skills, applications and implications of
science), Mathematical skills (applying mathematics).

Career Prospects
Completing the Science and Additional Science courses would equip students with a solid scientific
grounding that they could use to study other science related courses. If a student wished to follow
this route into AS/A2 Level study at Dubai British School they would have to meet the entry
requirements for their chosen GCE Level science subject (an A and B Grade at GCSE Science and
Additional Science).
For those students seriously considering AS/A2 sciences, they should be opting for the Further
Additional Science course (see optional GCSE subject pages).
