At Keele, you’ll develop a deep appreciation of human
disorders and diseases from a scientific and an NHS
Pathology practitioner’s perspective. Your studies will
integrate human physiology, biochemistry, immunology,
neuroscience and molecular and cell biology, benefiting
from research-led teaching and the input of professionals
at the Royal Stoke University Hospital’s Pathology
Department. You’ll have opportunities to develop
independent research skills through your final year
experimental research project. Placement opportunities
may include a one-year work placement or a summer’s
research in the UK or abroad or you could apply
for selection onto the Applied Biomedical Science
degree, which includes a hospital pathology
laboratory placement.
What will this mean for my future?
Your Biomedical Science degree from Keele will prepare
you to work in high-tech hospital laboratories in the NHS
or private sector, but you might also work in consultancy,
research, education or management. You might follow
a career as a biomedical scientist in the haematology,
clinical biochemistry, immunology, microbiology or
histopathology sections of Pathology. Alternatively,
you might branch out into patent law, research, medical
sale or teaching or build on your Biomedical Science
degree to study for other healthcare professional careers
such as medicine. Completing a placement, at home
or abroad, as part of a degree will add invaluable work
experience onto your CV.
Your degree will be accredited by the Institute of Biomedical
Science and the Royal Society of Biology, assuring you of
the quality of the programme as preparation for a career in
Pathology. *Students who elect to study abroad for a single
semester will not receive an IBMS accredited degree.
MONICA STANIEK STUDIED
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE
“After 4 years at Keele
University studying
Biomedical Science I decided
to continue my passion for
science and undertake a PhD
at Lancaster University in
parasitology and tropical
medicine. The passion and
enthusiasm of the lecturers
and tutors at Keele not only
made me really enjoy my
degree and the 4 years I spent
there, but also had a massive
influence on my decision to
continue in further education
as well as enhancing my
interest in continuing a career
in science and academia.
The diverse range of different
topics that I studied at Keele
over the 4 years of my degree
showed me that there is a
wide variety of different
scientific areas and allowed
me to focus on a particular
topic that I found interesting
which now the sole focus of
my PhD.”
