Oil and fats derived from plants are playing crucial roles in ensuring global food and energy security against the backdrop of depleting finite resources and population growth .
My research team works very closely with the industry and various professional bodies to address some of the sustainability challenges facing the oil and fats industry . Our research projects cover the following areas : ( 1 ) sustainable production and quality improvement of palm oil ; ( 2 ) valorisation of low quality lipid feedstocks to renewable fuel and oleochemicals ; ( 3 ) development of novel microencapsulation or emulsification processes for oil-soluble bioactives for food , nutraceutical , and pharmaceutical
applications ; ( 4 ) Life cycle and technoeconomic assessments of novel oil and fats processes . These projects are funded by industry and FRGS ( MOHE ), PRGS ( MOHE ), Science Fund ( MOSTI ).
Currently , I am directing the Monash-Industry Palm Oil Research and Education Platform ( MIPO ). Our laboratory is equipped with many advanced instruments for oil and fats processing and analysis . We provide contract research and analytical services and we welcome all kind of collaborations . For further information , please visit www . monash . edu . my / mipo .

Cost Effective Solutions to Sustainable Water Sources

Dr Poh , Phaik Eong Associate Professor PhD , CEng ( IChemE )
Research expertise : Anaerobic digestion , POME treatment , Greywater treatment , Waste management , Decentralised wastewater treatment systems

Water is an essential component to sustain human lives . However , anthropogenic activities have led to contamination of freshwater sources and many rural communities lack access to potable water sources . My team focuses on technologies that reduce energy and chemical consumption to treat contaminated water to meet discharge standards .
Few focal technologies that we work on are ( i ) anaerobic digestion of wastewater , using minimal chemicals and producing bioenergy as a byproduct ; ( ii ) decentralised membrane treatment system to reduce contaminants from greywater and river water for rural communities ; ( iii ) combination of advanced treatment system for decentralised sewage wastewater treatment .
We work closely with industrial partners and academics from Malaysia , UK , China , South Africa , Mexico and Thailand to develop cost effective and automated solutions that can benefit as many users as possible - with the aim to drive closer to United Nations ’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 ( Clean Water and Sanitation ).
