Computational fluid dynamics is a tool used to find solutions to many contemporary issues . With regards to energy harvesting , wind induced vibration can be transformed from something undesirable to a source of energy . Studies have shown that structures that are susceptible to galloping can induce strong vibration over a wider range of wind speeds , thus favouring energy harvesting .
CFD is also used in the modelling of nano-particle transport in fluid . Our studies have shown that even though some nano-particle suspensions are unstable , a suitable setup with static mixers can provide adequate mixing and achieve higher heat transfer rates that nano-fluids are known for and an increase in overall efficiency . Other areas of study include modelling of stratified sensible
Vortices shedding from a square prism experiencing galloping excitation . heat thermal energy storage tanks and marine barriers used for pollution control . In thermal energy storage tanks , our studies look into how best to balance pumping power , diffuser design while minimizing mixing so as to minizine energy losses .
Mixing of reduced graphene oxide nanoparticles in water using a static mixer resulting in heat transfer enhancements .
Engineering in Medicine and Healthcare
The Biomedical Engineering Modelling and Simulation ( BEMS ) research group specialises in the application of engineering solutions to problems in healthcare and medicine . Our research group applies computational modelling techniques to facilitate treatment planning through the development of prediction platforms and virtual patients . Other than that ,
our in-silico studies also focus on elucidating the fundamental mechanics of various pathological conditions , which play an important part in facilitating improved diagnosis and uncovering new mechanical biomarkers . Some of the research areas that are of interest include cancer biomechanics , cancer treatment , cardiovascular systems , respiratory system , mechanical ventilation , shear wave elastography for chronic kidney disease detection and many more . BEMS has a wide network of local and international collaborations , including but not limited to University of Malaya , University of Nottingham Malaysia , Nanyang Technological University and Ospedale San Raffaele .
