Modern civilizations have always required some form of clean , abundant , and cheap supply of renewable energy such as solar and wind generation , in order to prosper socially and economically . Recent years , solar generation is getting wide acceptance among Malaysian community . Integration of intermittent renewable generation into smart grids has not only increased the complexities in power system operations , but also magnified the need for balancing and , therefore , short-term flexible resources to maintain system reliability . In contrast , secure and reliable electric power grid operation is important to social wellbeing . Natural disasters such as flood , hurricane , earthquake and etc ., may cause blackout , which increase the needs of resilience smart grid .
Currently , I am focus on various optimization frameworks for smart grid with renewable energy integration , which cover stochastic generation scheduling , peer-topeer energy trading , microgrid , virtual power plant , smart home and smart building , transportable energy storage , as well as resilience-based smart grid operation .

Dr . Chan Ping Yi is an educator and researcher at Monash University Malaysia . Since the year 2013 , she has been involved in biomechanical engineering research . She specializes in the measurement and data analysis of Parkinson ’ s disease tremor symptoms . Previously she has developed an objective measurement system for Parkinson ’ s disease tremor . The quantification system involves the kinematics of human motion , specifically in multi- degrees-offreedom relative motions .
The quality of the research work is proven by the success in publishing papers in IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering as well as Scientific Reports
by the publisher , Springer Nature . The system and methods of quantifying tremors of multipledegrees-of-freedom coupled motions have been filed for patent in Malaysia ( MyIPO ) and Patent
Cooperation Treaty ( PCT ).
She has established research collaborations with medical company ( Freedom Med Inc ) and
hospitals ( Penang General Hospital , Loh Guan Lye ). Together with Universiti Sains Malaysia , she has involved in biomedical related research projects funded by CREST grants ( industry collaborators : Motorola , NI , Freedom Med , SAS ).
Her research interest includes developing solutions to :
• Biomechanically reduce tremor symptoms for Parkinson ’ s disease patients
• Provide AI-assisted tool for the classification of motor symptom
• Explore and study new characteristics of motor symptoms of Parkinson ’ s disease
She has also expanded her research experience in concentrated solar power generation . In this project , the research team is interested in
Peer-to-Peer energy trading
Smart grid with hurricane weather moving trajectory
developing a compact CPVT that is applicable in the residential areas . The challenge includes developing a light beam splitting and concentration mechanism with the size constraint to match with that of the rooftop of building . We welcome more interested researchers to join us in this project .
