The pharmaceutical research sector is regularly referred to as the Jewel in the Crown of British Manufacturing and is a major exporting industry. You will study chemistry and medicinal chemistry modules throughout your degree and can complement them by selecting modules from our exciting range of electives in Year 1 and 2. Our Year 1 modules are designed to focus our students on the fundamental aspects of Chemistry and necessary laboratory and analytical skills in preparation for advanced study (see pages 10–11 for full description). Our Year 2 chemistry modules build on knowledge and skills gained in Year 1 and place theory alongside relevant modern applications of medicinal chemistry. In Year 3, a choice of topics is offered allowing you to specialise in areas that interest you. (See page 25 for full description). Instead of the Medicinal Chemistry Research Dissertation students undertake a Synoptic Topics in Chemistry module Year 4 The final year of our Master in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry MChem is designed to equip you with the specialist knowledge expected of a Medicinal Chemistry researcher. You study two modules Applied Medicinal Chemistry Topics and Research Medicinal Chemistry Topics which further develop and expand your subject knowledge of Medicinal Chemistry and you also undertake a research training module; Applied Medicinal Chemistry Topics • X-Ray-Crystallography Analytical • Advanced Organic NMR Analytical • Physical Organic Chemistry • Rings, Cages and Clusters • Solids and Surfaces • Transition Metals • Heterocyclic Chemistry Research Medicinal Chemistry Topics • Chemical Sensors • Modern Synthesis Protocols • Chemistry of Flow • Electrochemistry • Computational Materials Chemistry • Carbohydrate Chemistry keele.ac.uk/chemistry
