CHEMISTRY AND MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY | 19 Student Experience Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicities, and around 40% of our students are female. The school has a strong commitment to equality and diversity and the EDSAT committ ee aims to promote equality and diversity for the benefi t of our staff and students. Keele was recently awarded an Athena Swan Bronze Award for its commitment in these areas. Our staff are friendly, approachable and enthusiastic and you join a vibrant and forward-thinking School when you become a Chemistry student at Keele. Your development as a chemist and general welfare is monitored by a Year Tutor, and all students are assigned a Personal Tutor whose role is to off er guidance on study skills, professional development and careers opportunities as well as being a friendly face as required. We have an active Student-Staff Voice Committee which provides a forum for students to raise any concerns they have about the course and work with staff to improve the course generally. Our student Chemical Society (ChemSoc) organises a wide range of events for all members of the School including parties, an end of year ball and sporting activities such as student-staff football matches. International Year Studying abroad for a year allows you to expand your horizons and experience a new culture. Our BSc Chemistry and Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry degrees can integrate an International Year which allows you to study at one of our overseas partner institutions in Year 3 of study before returning to complete your fi nal year at Keele. Admission to this programme is at the end of the Year 1 and subject to meeting academic requirements and application to our Study Abroad Programme. At the partner institution you will study a range of chemistry modules which will complement the Keele Chemistry programme and include the option to select electives, further broadening your experience. In addition half of your time will be spent undertaking a placement which might be carrying out an independent research project, working in industry or working in a school. Study Abroad All students have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner institutions for one semester. Through the Study Abroad tutor you are guided through the application process and together you choose the partner institution you wish to study at and the modules that you will study are agreed. Popular countries include Canada, USA and Australia. Dayne Forrest, Medicinal Chemistry Major I studied Medicinal Chemistry and Philosophy and studied for a semester at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia as part of Keele’s study abroad programme. Macquarie University, like Keele, off ered a warm friendly atmosphere and Australia is such an incredible place.
