We have a robust intellectual curiosity about the world , with particular expertise in Southeast Asia .
We want to know how the various peoples , communities , regions , states , institutions and organisations that constitute this world interact and shape the national , regional and global dynamics we encounter today . By understanding the forces that shape our lives , we aim to tackle the important issues so that we can change things for the better .
Our research , which spans the humanities and social sciences , addresses distinct disciplinary fields and explores issues of culture , religion and identity ; politics and policy ; media and communication ; gender ; international affairs and governance , and literature and the screen . In reality , there are rarely hard lines dividing these fields , and the many research projects undertaken by our academic staff and graduate research students often cross disciplinary boundaries . Through research organised into four exciting multi-disciplinary research clusters , we seek to understand and chart social transformation in this region .
The School of Arts and Social Sciences is made up of diverse scholars , creating a lively , supportive and stimulating academic environment in which we undertake our research . Our researchers are distinguished and active members of their field both in Malaysia and internationally , and offer a wide range of expertise to our students . When you pursue a research degree with us , you ’ ll undertake an independent research project that you ’ ve developed under the supervision of at least two supervisors to make an original contribution to your field . We have two research degrees that you can choose from – a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy . Join us in your postgraduate journey under our broad research clusters .
