Q:
What is entailed in being an editor
of Modern Theology, a leading journal
in the discipline of theology?
I started with the journal as a post-doctoral fellow at Duke
University in the mid-1990s. Then senior editor of Modern
Theology, Greg Jones, had just been installed as new dean of
the Divinity School and needed help. So I came on board as
managing editor. My charge consisted largely of exercising
administrative oversight of the journal. Gradually, I was invited to take an active part in reviewing submissions and contributed ideas about planning issues. So the transition from
managing editor to co-editor and then senior editor was a
rather seamless one. When I was invited to join the theology
faculty at St. Bonaventure in 2000, Greg asked me if I wanted
