dream of being a world-renowned original recording/performing artist, and it is not
so much that I have abandoned the dream of ‘making it’, but more like
reality set in. I am a father now, and as any parent knows, it is more
about putting bread on the table than indulging in self-serving matters
such as chasing a dream.”
“Actually, I consider myself
fortunate that I am actually
able to provide extensively
for my family solely through
my love for music and not
have to worry about, say, delivering appliances all day or
something so that I could afford to MAYBE own a guitar.
IF I were lucky. If you want
to call that selling out, then
I am fortunate to be able to
sell out just about any night
of the week that I choose, and
not have to fret about someone else making that decision
for me. It is still work, but it is
work that I love, and not everyone, unfortunately, is able
to say that. Everyone sells out, some sell out hourly delivering pizza, I
just happen to sell out nightly delivering music and entertainment, and
I would not have it any other way.”
The idea of making a living exclusively with music on a regional basis
was barely a possibility 20 years ago when Mike started. There are so
many places to play today as compared to then.
“Twenty years ago, there were barely five places in Columbia that
would hire acoustic performers, now there are ten or more places in
every part of the city, not to mention tour-able franchises such as Wild
Wing Café all over the southeast that will book not only my rock ensembles, but my acoustic solo act as well. The idea is to keep ‘em singing
and dancing and drinking, and they will want me back. I just book it,
and they will come.”
