Point 08
P
by John Smithson
oint 08 was founded in 2013 in New Bern, NC by
childhood friends Derek Hyde and Lee Morency
with the addition of Eddie Stancil on vocals and rhythm
guitar, and Jeremy Joyner on drums.
Coming from varied musical backgrounds, the
members of Point 08 wanted to bring a different sound
to todays music scene. With most of todays metal scene
being bombarded by hardcore and screamo, they decided to take a different approach, leaning toward traditional metal. With clean, yet growly vocals, driving
guitar riffs, intricate basslines, screaming leads, and
in-your-face drumbeats, they bring a sound not often
heard in todays metal scene. That combines the raw intensity of modern metal with the soul of metal music
from days gone by.
Vocalist, Eddie Stancil, was the recipient of the 2014
Carolina Music Award for Best Male Rock Artist. Our
music has been featured on local rock station 99.5 The
X, Internet radio show Uncharted Chaos on www.
neueregelradio.com, and numerous other internet stations worldwide. We are currently booking upcoming
shows, and planning to return to the studio to record
more original material for our debut album.
So how long have you guys been together as a band?
Share with us a brief history.
Derek: A little over a year and a half.
Lee: Derek and I got back in touch with one another
after several years and started jamming out. It did not
take long before we were looking to see who else we
could dig up.
Eddie: I answered an ad for a vocalist and came out
and met Derek and Lee. We seemed to click. We needed
a drummer, so I suggested a friend that I had played
in a couple bands with.
We called up Jeremy and
everything just sort of fell
together perfectly.
Who in the band
came up with your name?
What, if any, reason did
you guys choose your
name?
Derek: I was watching COPS. A guy failed
a breath test. Blew a .08.
I thought “what a cool
name.”
Lee: Derek and I were
just funning around one
day when we just decided
why not? Point 08 it is.
What are the members names and what

play?

guys influences? Would you say that’s where you get
your sound from?
Eddie: That is a long list… Some of my biggest influences are Marilyn Manson, Korn, Pantera, Johnny
Cash, Waylon Jennings, Rob Zombie, Ozzy, Danzig, the
Misfits, and Avenged Sevenfold.
Derek: Sabbath, Rob Zombie, Zakk Wylde. We get
our sound from a mix of all of our influences.
Jeremy: A7X, Slipknot, Lamb of God, and
Arch Enemy.
Lee: Overkill, Crowbar, Anthrax, Iron
Maiden, Merciful Fate. My personal feeling is
that Black Sabbath and Motorhead are a prime
example of our founding fathers for the metal
that we all love and hear today. There are far to
many bands to list.
At what age did you guys decide you wanted to be in a band? Is that the same time you
become interested in Music?
Eddie: From birth. Haha. My dad was a
musician back in his day, my grandma was a
pianist. Two of my uncles had a country band.
I grew up around music, and have always loved
it.
Derek: At a young age from me. Around
9-10.
Jeremy: 15-16 years old when I decided I
wanted to be in a band. I got in to metal music
around 11-12 years old.
Lee: I was listening to Ozzy one day and decided I
wanted a guitar and I was going to learn to play if it
killed me.
When it comes to creating Is there one person who
writes all the songs? Or do you guys write them as a
band?
Derek: I’d say we all put our input and creativity into
our songs.
Jeremy: We each put our own ideas into each song.
Lee: We try to have our own sound. Eddie has written the vocals, Derek has written the rhythm and lead,
Jeremy kicks and punches the beat, and I am bringing
the thunder. It all turns out for one hell of a storm!
Eddie: Yeah, I write the lyrics and vocal melodies.
Derek covers the guitar parts, and works with Lee for
the basslines. Jeremy does his own thing behind the
drums and it all comes together.
Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Derek: Driving, jamming, practice… Moods are my
inspiration.
Lee: Our inspiration comes from within. We all
practice at home and present material to one another
at our group practice sessions. When we practice sometimes we come up with new material right out left field!
Eddie: Some of our songs, I would listen to the music and write lyrics to them. Some, I had lyrics already
and we work the song to them. There are actually a couple of the songs we play that the lyrics are from poems
