“It kicked my ass, to be honest with you,” he says. “I
haven’t played that intensely for an hour in a long time.”
If Gardner’s ass was kicked, it wasn’t evident from
the view of the crowd. He was not only the literal timekeeper, he also kept things on track between songs
when technical difficulties made the going a little rough
– calling out song titles and making sure everyone was
ready to go. At one point, Matheson even joked from
the stage that someone had hacked their set list.
“My joke about the set list being hacked referred to
some confusion we were having,” Matheson explains a
few days after the show. “Someone either kept reading
the set list wrong or [was] forgetting the song names.
We definitely didn’t go from song to song very smoothly since we hadn’t played in so long.”
But it’s those moments that reveal a band’s mettle.
Sixtensplit worked their way through the challenges
with good humor and top-flight professionalism, never
wavering or making a noticeable misstep. Their set was
just damn fun. And it was obvious that the band was
having as much fun as the boisterous crowd.
What the band has together is unique, Matheson
says.
“It’s hard to describe the band,” he says. “John is an
unusual guitarist and he plays some very unusual chord
variations, but not much soloing. Patti is a very unusual
singer, as well. She is very good, but doesn’t sound like
anyone in particular to me. Stan is also a very unusual
drummer that plays a lot of fast, difficult stuff.”
According to Davis, the great attitudes and passion
of the band’s members will fuel what lies ahead – including revisiting some unfinished business.
“We are planning on finishing up some songs that
we started writing years ago when the band stopped
playing for a while. We’re hoping to record them sometime this year and release, at least, an EP. Jay was also
talking about re-releasing our first album this year.”
And please tell me we won’t have to wait another 10
years to see Sixtensplit on stage again.
“Everyone is really busy, but we had so much fun
playing [the Art Bar show] that we all seem to be on
the same page and want to play again,” Davis says. “We
probably won’t play every month, but we’re hoping to
get in a couple of gigs a year if we can. If time permits,
who knows? In the future we might have the opportunity to rev the band back up to a full-time project. We
just are not sure yet and will have to see what happens.”

lashed out at someone I love and treated them with less
love and respect than they deserve just because I am
having a shitty time. That said though, loving someone
when they are being awesome and likeable is very easy
and it’s when you aren’t so likeable that you find out
who your true friends are. Anyone can love a person
when they are being the best of themselves but a true
friend loves you when you are at your worst.
Is there anything else you wanted to add that I
didn’t mention … What’s in store for the future?
We are about to embark on a UK tour during April
with Ashestoangels, Fearless Vampire Killers and The
Dead Betas to name but a few...and then we have our
single ‘Invincible Girl’ coming out in support of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation...with a little help from the
incredible wizards at Illamasqua.

Do you have any regrets?
Not yet. We’re pursuing our
dreams and that would’ve been
the only regret was not to give it
everything we’ve got. Although
I guess there’s a few nights we
probably regret drinking a bit
too much…it happens. J
Is there anything else you
wanted to add that I didn’t mention … What’s in store for the future/Where do you see you, and the station say 5 years

We’re working on new music once we get off the
road, so stay tuned for that.

an attitude shared by many bands throughout the CSRA.
Six’s more serious and completely focused other
guitarist, Darrell Watson, said there are “tons of great
bands” in the Augusta area.
“You really should watch out for all of ‘em,” Watson
said further. None of the guys said they would be surprised if any of the bands or musicians in Augusta made
it to the next level of musical success.
The guys are also proud of the way they try to help
out newbies to the Augusta scene. They are often asked
to help someone find a band to play with or other musicians who just want to jam. If someone is moving to
the area and they would like to start playing music, the
guys said the best thing for that person to do is to go to
as many shows as possible.
“You gotta go out and talk to other musicians,” Bennett said. “Everybody here will talk to you when they
get off stage, so just walk up and start a conversation.”
As for Six, the guys said they will ride the success
they’ve enjoyed as far as it will take them.
“I mean, who doesn’t want to be famous?” O’Brien
said.

covers, they can be found online at Re
