You can now launch a Merchant Marine career through Rockland Community College . Working with a US Coast Guard-approved training provider , RCC is offering a new program featuring a blend of online training with handson classroom instruction at the College ’ s campuses . The U . S . Maritime Administration says the nation faces a critical need for new merchant mariners over the next five years . Maritime careers |
include ship officers , engineers , technicians , food service workers and maintenance crew . Maritime Studies is a partnership between RCC Continuing Education and Learn America , USCG-approved training provider . Most of the coursework is completed online , with one to three days of in-person training . Mariners seeking work on board any ship are required to complete a Coast Guard-certified Basic Training course . Through the RCC / Learn America program , |
the majority of this course is conducted online , with three consecutive days of training at campus sites to complete the certification . Students will also be able to sign up for any of the individual elements of the Basic Training course . The RCC / Learn America program also includes an Advanced Firefighting course , and a comprehensive course for those who wish to become a Designated Duty Engineer . These courses |
are also a combination of online study and classroom training and can help those already working in the field to progress up the professional ladder . Most in-person classes for Maritime Studies will take place at RCC ’ s Suffern and Haverstraw campuses . Firefighting classes will be held at the Rockland Fire Training Center in Pomona .
