Welcome to the premier edition of Mind Set. Although technically this is an advice column, it will be so much more to our readers. My name is Dr. Susan Addis. I am a licensed psychologist. I have practiced in a variety of settings throughout the years. I am excited to be a part of this new, innovative online magazine.
Why would anyone want to read what I have to say? What is there about me and what I have to share that would entice the reader to return time after time to read this column? I will tell you in a few brief words.
As I said, I have worked in a variety of settings, and have a lot of experience in counseling and helping those in need. What makes me so different is that I have also been involved in the arts. As a trained singer, I have sung in many different venues. I have performed in quite a few community theater productions. You may say that I don’t really understand as I am not a professional performer. That is where you are wrong! As the mother of a professional actress and singer who has struggled over the years to make her way, I can tell you that I have a pretty good sense of some of the things you may be going through as a performer.
I have always thought that those therapists who have experienced some of the same things that their clients are going through are much more effective, as they can relate to what their clients are feeling. It is not at all possible for therapists to experience all that their clients have experienced, but it does lend more credibility.
For example, have you ever heard people close to you say, “Why don’t you get a real job?” While you can understand why they would say that, these kinds of statements do not contribute to a sense of well being, or feeling good about your profession.
Choosing to pursue a career in the arts, no matter what path that may take, is one of the hardest to pursue. It is our hope that this magazine can offer hope and useful information to those brave enough to pursue their dreams. I will be more than happy to address the various issues that the readers feel are important and difficult for them, so that they can find answers to the mystery of how to live out their dreams.
It is my hope and prayer that you all find peace and happiness!
