A member of the Screen Actors Guild Conservatory for over 10 years, he has graced the screens of television and continues to pass down his wisdom of acting through lectures, workshops and classes. When you leave a class with him, you are changed and transformed into what a real actor has the potential to be. It’s that kind of reputation that precedes him and it is always an honor to watch him work. He has also been a charismatic entertainer and model with the John Robert Powers Agency and would make appearances in the Pacific Islands, such as Hawaii and Guam.
As we sit on a porch overlooking a small pond, I pull out my pen and begin to reflect with my father on his life and all he’s accomplished in show biz. I began to re-discover the wealth of knowledge I have had the pleasure to grow up around. As a kid, I watched him on “Magnum P.I”, headlining a variety of shows, from beauty pageants to 50’s sock hops. He’s done it all and ready to re emerge once again.
Originating in Illinois, Dad has traveled all over the U.S as a live performer, joining groups like The Hurricanes in California in the 60’s and even won a music award (5 Star Music Masters) for recording More Than The Sun. A proficient guitarist and powerful singer, he could sing anything from rock to opera and make any lady. He met Elvis, Frank Sinatra (later working with Sinatra's musicians for his personal projects), Paul Anka and many more. He has always seemed limitless in his abilities as his hunger went much deeper over time and emerged as a professional boxer at Miami Beach’s 5th st. gym, where he sparred with the like’s of Sugar Ray Leonard and was 12 - 0. I have a vague memory of Muhamad Ali carrying me as a young child around the ring as the round sign. Someone’s got to have a photo in existence of that somewhere. He was very well known in the boxing world, but his thirst expanded to include martial arts, becoming a black belt, even training with the Green Berets.
Today, I am proud to say, Al Mauro (Sr) is just getting started. From the man who, at one point, spent time in the Black Hills with Native Americans studying spirituality and riding horses, to the man who could melt hearts with his voice. He is truly the guru of cool and continues to teach anyone willing to be the real actor, the search for one's true self.
