TOP PHOTO: This great old pub has the
classic English thatched roof that is getting
rarer to see these days. Inside, there are
neat photos of personnel and aircraft from
the 56th FG. It is within walking distance of
the field, and the troops used to frequent it
when allowed off base. They have wonderful English ales and beers of all kinds, and
the food isn’t bad, either!
LEFT PHOTO: Roger Freeman and me
in one of the tents protecting the aircraft
during the weekend. You can see the B-26
build in- progress of Phil Clark, who later
sold the finished plane to Brian O’Meara.
Roger grew up on a farm close to the field,
and remembered getting invited in to play
on the P-47s by the ground crews and
pilots on base. He became one of the foremost historians and authors on the USAAF
in England during WWII and wrote many
books on the subject. Sadly, he passed
away from cancer not long after this photo
was taken.
