Find your career path
A very warm welcome to Careermag for School Leavers published during
very uncertain times. Student life can be stressful enough without adding
COVID-19 into the mix. It’s changing the way we live, learn and work;
with restrictions on daily life ordered by the government.
It’s important to follow government guidelines and try to remain positive during this challenging time.
Due to coronavirus, schools, colleges and universities across the country have been doing their best
to meet young people’s needs with lessons delivered online and limited numbers of students allowed
back in the classroom.
If someone had told us this was the way we’d all be living this time last year, would you have believed
them? Probably not!
Regardless, you’re undoubtedly thinking about your next steps and future pathway choices. For some
of you, this might be fairly straightforward, but for many, it can feel completely overwhelming with
so many decisions to make. Finding labour market information* to support you in making a wellinformed
decision on your future is vital, but it’s not always easy.
Whether you want to go to university, take a year out or do an apprenticeship, BTEC or A-Levels, it’s
important to remember that there is no right or wrong route. It’s ultimately about doing what is best for you.
With results day nearing, there is no better time than now to swot up on your career options. Talk to
your teachers, discuss the different career paths with your parents and friends but remember, the final
decision is in your hands.
This year’s Results Day is guaranteed to be different from previous years. With no exams and results
graded by teachers who have had to based on a range of other factors, it is important to try not to worry.
We recognise young people are also concerned about exam cancellations ‘negatively impacting’
future options, but that’s a myth we can bust right there. Although the current COVID-19 outbreak has
led to exam cancellations, the Government has promised to ensure pupils’ opportunities will not be
hindered because of it. Employers and educators all leading the way to support young people into
employment, college and university as you take your next steps.
Pearson and Careermap.co.uk would like to wish you all the best with deciding your next steps over
the coming months. Stay strong, ask for help and remember our inboxes are always open for support.
Careermap.co.uk would like to send a huge thank you to Pearson and the BTEC Team for sponsoring this
issue and to all of our supporters.
* labour market information is information about the current workplace. Such as: how many jobs there are in a sector; where they are
located; how much you can expect to earn in different types of jobs...
