because when you work for a team you are not the one going to the bedsides and helping them recover . When you are their partner you really do live it and breathe it with them .” So all those years experience working in racing , all that help in understanding racing , when it goes from professional to personal , it is a very different thing . The best part of being a rider ’ s partner ? “ When they are succeeding , and they are happy , doing well . And for me the best part is having a good secure team , it allows you as wife to know that I can stand back and know he is being well looked after . That is a nice , comforting thing .” The worst thing about being a ‘ racing wife ?’ “ The average person may have a bad day at work , or something has gone wrong , but when our boys have a bad day at the office it could mean months of rehabilitation , it could mean going to hospital beds , or even seeing them really down and out because they have crashed or they haven ’ t done as well ,” said Tarsh . The point made right off by Hattie is reiterated by Tarsh . “ The hard thing is that there is no easy way ,” she stated . “ The highs are high and the lows are terrible . I always say that the middle way of racing is nonexistent . You are either winning or you ’ re losing , it is just combating that battle of emotions between the good and the bad . We have lived really good highs , but people often forget that Jonathan had some terrible lows , terrible accidents . We got engaged off the back of one of his worst accidents , and we didn ’ t even know if he would race again . Fortunately he did , but it could have been very different .” The highs are high and the lows are low . Even at its most stable , it seems that the life of a racing wife is lived as a series of extremes
