Director for the project together as a team manager with Udo Mark , at that time , who was also an ex-Superbike rider . We did the WorldSSP series and we basically won the World Championship in 2000 , running two German riders ( Jörg Teuchert as champ and Christian Kellner as nearly champ ). I started to do Crew Chief because we needed one guy to look after each side later on , because when everything got more complex with electronics , carburettors and so on , I started to do this job .” It was a very English rider next for the legendary German based Yamaha WordSSP bike that has taken a few riders to the World title , then put away for a while , then brought back into life . It was a halt that made the biggest opportunity for Marcus , it appears . “ Then we had one rider that was called Cal Crutchlow … Because Yamaha stopped the Supersport effort , I went to Superbike with Cal as his Crew Chief and worked there . Then Yamaha stopped the racing effort in World Superbike , so I went with Eugene Laverty to Aprilia and started ‘ the Aprilia years ’. From then on Marcus went to MotoGP™ , and other things , and worked with riders like Stefan Bradl , Aleix Espargaro and Johan Zarco . It was a busy time , but he learned a lot . Family commitments and other reasons brought I came to his current BMW project . “ From the past I had a relationship with Shaun Muir doing BSB for him in 2015 , and also former projects before in BSB when I was working at
Yamaha . So , I started to work in this project here as Crew Chief and then also taking over some development situations . So for me it ’ s very nice and a very interesting occupation , I have to say .” Did I mention electronics before , as an increasingly common background for Crew Chiefs in the still relatively free electronic environment that WorldSBK provides ? “ I am an IT engineer , and I am here by coincidence ,” says Giovanni Crupi , Scott Redding ’ s Crew Chief for three seasons now . His way into being in the WorldSBK paddock has one common link with Marcus , but then they diverge significantly . “ When I was young I rode my motorcycle every day and I barely used my car ,” said Giovanni . “ I was very often at the workshop servicing my bike . I was working for a computer science company as a technician and the workshop had a problem with the computer . I was there collecting my bike and I said , ‘ I can fix it , it is my job .’ The mechanic said , next year , every bike will be fuel injected so I know how the engine works and what to do but I do not know how to use the computer on the electronics side . I knew nothing about motorbikes except riding them , but I can press some buttons ! This was 2002 , in Padova . I learned a lot from that and he was helping a guy in racing , so I tuned the ECU and the guy , Giovanni Molinari , won all the races . Then he moved to the Italian championship . Then we went to the Italian championship with Alessandro Antonello .”
