EXCITING CONTENT the big twins have been pretty strict in year one . Oli seems well equipped and supported but he is still a rookie . He remembers little of his Dad ’ s deeds of derring-do in Europe , in case you thought he had strong memories to fall back on .
Does he even remember living in Europe , moving around the paddocks ? “ No , not at all ,” said Oli just after Superpole qualifying at Barcelona . “ I think I maybe remember one Misano race where my cousin painted my hair , but that ’ s it . Honestly , I don ‘ t remember anything . I was two and three at the time , maybe four .”
So in a way he ’ s gone to Europe with the same wide-eyed wonderment and anticipation of any other young Aussie . What ’ s it been like , mate ? “ It ’ s weird …” he said . “ I kind of expected everyone to be in their own world and they don ’ t want to speak to anyone , but everyone who rides together – okay , maybe some riders don ’ t like each other - but other than that , it ’ s kind of a group . If you see someone you say “ hey .” You can almost walk into any garage and say , “ hey .” It ’ s good . I ’ ve definitely made some friends . We ’ re not friends on track , but that ’ s how racing is ! I love the paddock .”
Now that ’ s a big tick box filled in already . He ’ s settled well enough , in Ravenna , Italy , with training places , go kart tracks and lots of things to keep him fit and sharp between races . To settle him even more his girlfriend from Aus has recently come over to Europe too . Troy , and sometimes Mum Kim have been at the races in Europe , but by no means all of them . Troy thinks that even at 18 and 19 Oli is already his own man , and Troy ’ s job of getting him into global racing and seeing him find his own groove is largely done .
