Whatever anyone thinks of Michael van der Mark you cannot miss the fact that he is very much his own man . Not a social media über-player or one to trumpet his achievements too loudly , his public profile ranges from almost invisible between races to unmissable podium prowess . We try to find out what makes Michael tick both on and off track .
Michael van der Mark is another example of one of those riders you can find all over the race paddocks of the world - rushing down the same path as his ex-racer father in pursuit of achieving the only dream he has ever held dear . The trouble is that only the part about his father Henk being a top level rider back when is actually true . Trucks and bicycles interested Michael as a small child , not motorbikes .
He started racing late compared to most but has more than made up for it now . Looking back into the now deep past of ‘ MVDM ’ s ’ racing life and career we sat down with Mikey at the most recent WorldSBK round in the UK , to try and get him to open up and talk about himself . Not easy for someone who is as ‘ unstarry ’ as Michael , but we got there in the end , and happily he opened up a little more . A happy end this particular weekend too , as he went on to score his first podium of the year just a few days later . What better place to catch up with ‘ Magic Mikey ’ than Donington Park , of course , the site of his - and the Netherlands ’ - first ever WorldSBK Race win ( in truth , a double ) for Yamaha in 2018 . Or maybe Assen would have been even better ? That was the site where he scored his first career WorldSBK podium for Honda - and the Netherlands ’ -
