The Written Word: Why Getting it on Paper is so Hard & How to Help Writing is the most complex of all academic tasks. The interaction between expression and transcription is multifaceted. Explicit instruction and assistive technology tools make a huge difference for students who have amazing things to say, but just can't get it on paper. WORKSHOP OUTCOMES (HIGHLIGHTS): Ÿ Classify text by genre. Ÿ Identify main idea sentences, connecting words and topics that t each type of expository paragraph organization. Ÿ Analyze text for the purpose of identifying the inferences that students must make to comprehend. Ÿ Explicitly and effectively teach concepts related to spelling. Ÿ Integrate basic skill instruction with composition in writing lessons Ÿ Select and design activities to teach important components of writing. Ÿ Analyze students' writing to determine specic instructional needs. Ÿ Provide specic, constructive feedback to students. Ÿ Teach research-based writing for the intended audience. Ÿ Make appropriate written recommendations for the use of assistive technology in writing. Ÿ Use multisensory techniques to teach letter naming and letter formation in manuscript and cursive forms.
