A NEW CAMPUS AND THE BIRTH OF SASS
Today, I am the General Manager of the largest Film
Production company in India, in the largest film
industry in the world. Before I turned thirty, I was
made the Head of Production of a movie budgeted
at a US$100 million. This makes me the youngest
legitimate Production Head in the country. What do
you think gave me this drive and ability? Books and
assignments and theory? Maybe. But my true treasure
will be the people I met at Monash. The lessons on
how to communicate, how to broadcast, how to
produce, how to edit. No media tool can dazzle a
Communications student with solid, practical basics.
Because of teachers like Dr Yeoh, Andrew, Benjamin,
Jega and others, I viewed authority figures as friends
to learn from, rather than higher-ups to please.
Nish studied at MUM between 2005 and 2007.
He is currently the General Manager of a well-known
Film Production Company in India. He has also made
several films in different languages.
Even though my own personal problems kept me
from getting that elusive Arts degree, I stand before
you as a proud failure of the system. My failures at
48
Monash forced me to become an adult by showing
me the consequences of not living to my potential. I
owe Monash a great debt for what it taught me about
life. I Iearned what I could, ignored what I couldn’t,
and the universe rewarded me. My greatest regret
was not finishing my degree, but somehow I feel like
I have come full circle with this writing. I extend my
heartfelt gratitude to Dr Yeoh for asking me to write
this. I am happy to say I submitted this one on time for
a change. My debt to Monash will never be fully paid,
but I’ll get there one day.
