A NEW CAMPUS AND THE BIRTH OF SASS
The industry visit we organised was to an abandoned
shoplot that was used to house exploited Bangladeshi
migrant workers. We learnt that they had been
promised jobs in Malaysia but were not given any
when they arrived and were cheated out of their
upfront fees. It was an emotional experience for me
after knowing their individual stories and their short-
lived aspirations.

Thank you MUM SASS, for being that important
chapter in my life.
Abdullah graduated with Bachelor of Arts (2007)
and Bachelor of Arts Honours (2008) from SASS.
He is currently a Senior Fire Officer in Singapore
Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and a Commander of
a Fire Station.
Perhaps, subconsciously, that may be the reason
why I decided to join my nation’s emergency services
provider (Singapore Civil Defence Force) following
graduation – to be able to apply the things I’ve
learnt in order to help people in need, albeit in totally
unimaginable contexts. Ten years on, I am proud to
have graduated from a course that taught me to ‘read
texts beyond its face value’ from a university that
reminds me that we’re always learning,
