During his year-long visit to Gallaudet University, Dr. Palle Vestberg, of Copenhagen, Denmark,
challenged us repeatedly to become more involved in the practical applications of linguistic
research findings to real-world problems. His remarks were instrumental in convincing us to
undertake a critical examination of the practices of American deaf education.
