Since then , I have found out there are more deaf relatives from my Memaw ’ s family , along the Heflin bloodline . Memaw ’ s own brother was deaf . No wonder she loved me so and knew to stomp the floor to get my attention . But the Southern Code dictated that it was not to be talked of . It still exists , unfortunately . But now , there is hope . I was just given permission to teach my much younger deaf cousins ASL . My village is growing ever bigger by the day . I now am found , I now see and after being “ deaf ” growing up due to no access to ASL , I finally can hear through my eyes and speak with my hands .
