Since then, I have found out there are more deaf relatives from my Memaw’ s family, along the Heflin bloodline. Memaw’ s own brother was deaf. No wonder she loved me so and knew to stomp the floor to get my attention. But the Southern Code dictated that it was not to be talked of. It still exists, unfortunately. But now, there is hope. I was just given permission to teach my much younger deaf cousins ASL. My village is growing ever bigger by the day. I now am found, I now see and after being“ deaf” growing up due to no access to ASL, I finally can hear through my eyes and speak with my hands.
