THE BLACK DRUM is a very exciting full feature theatrical production with multiple signed music performances that were created by performers who come from the deaf community. Signed music can be seen as the newest artistic development that provides an authentic musical experience for deaf people. The Black Drum's synopsis: ...the story about a young woman, whose life is upturned when her tattoos come alive and propel her on a fantastical journey in search of her own inner music (https://dobbernationloves.com/life-culture/the-black-drum/). The Canadian Council for the Arts has funded $360,000 to the Canadian Cultural Society for the Deaf for the development of THE BLACK DRUM, and this production was presented by Soulpepper Theatre. THE BLACK DRUM's opening premiere was on June 19, 2019 in Toronto, Ontario and it played through June 29th.
