Editor’s Note
CONTENT IS KING
Moving into the millennial era, along with the booming existence of Internet,
it is common to say that everyone is producing their own content, some are unfiltered into the World
Wide Web. Bill Gates, in an essay dated back in 1996, mentioned the gigantic world of Internet has
allows people to be able to produce anything that they want. Gates mentioned that the Internet acts
as photocopier where the content can be produced at low cost, and aimed to spread to the mass
audiences.
This is in accordance with the opinion of Dr
Khairuddin in his ending speech of the 37th
Kolokium Kritikan Media, as he stated the
phrase ‘content is king’ as something that
every media player should be put in their
mind right now. Puncak Semangat Sdn
Bhd, owned by Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary
will operate and manage the infrastructure
for digital terrestrial television broadcast
(DTTB) service in Malaysia. The company
aims to offer services such as video-on-de-
mand, interactive games, home shopping
for the audience through hundreds of chan-
nels. This calls for action from the media
players and academicians to prepare the
future generation for the advanced think-
ing of how to satisfy the demands for good
contents to be broadcasted in the broadcast
services.
The need to diversify the beats in journal-
ism is also the key point taken from Kolok-
ium Kritikan Media session. We are lacking
in the area of business and breaking news
reporting and that shows how we are still
underrepresenting some of the crucial as-
pects of information in the society. We are
still behind in producing breaking stories
that happened in our country.
The Wang Kelian mass grave in Perlis is one
of the example how our news outlets were
just feeding from the international news
agencies. The perspective of the issues from
our side are still underrepresented, making
it is not easy for us to frame our own stories
globally.
However, there are some organisations that
come up with thorough and ground break-
ing stories for the readers. But are we, the
Malaysians are ready for it? The mentality
of the citizen themselves should be altered
in order for us to be able to compete in the
international level. We might have the re-
sources, the equipment, the money to bring
us outside, but ask ourselves, are the people
ready for it?
In conclusion, content is indeed a king. By
being the king, does not mean that it will
only flourish as something that is celebrat-
ed. If the king does not adhere to the norms
of the people, then that would be a problem
too. Thus, it is important for the content
producer to able synchronise their vision
with the audience for the communication
state to be able to grow old and blossom in
the coming years.
