Q
: You have spent many years in the metals and
engineering sector and have played crucial roles in
the affairs of the sector through your leadership positions
at SEIFSA and in business over the years. Have there
been people, during this period, who, in your view, have
made major contributions to the welfare of the sector
and whom you admire? If so, who are they and why do
you admire them or hold them in high regard?
A
: Of course, there are many outstanding people I have had the
privilege of interacting with over the years, and I will only refer to
the exceptional few here.
I have the utmost respect for brave, visionary, wise people whose values
are consistent, whether they are alone with the labrador or charming an
audience. People who conduct themselves with humility, commitment
to principle, truth, integrity and fairness whatever the scenario.
Determined and resilient people who see adversity as just another
event to overcome – and do so with courage, integrity and dignity.
These are:
Eric Samson of Macsteel and Ernie Behr of Trident Steel for their
bravery and vision.
Jack Gerber, also of Macsteel, was instrumental, especially after assuming
the Chairmanship of the Group, for positioning the Group, and doing
so with the qualities I have referred to above, at the very pinnacle
of worldwide steel trading, distribution and shipping – and he did so
without fear or favour.
John van Reenen, friend and partner, and founder of the VRN Steel
Group – brave, loyal, wise, generous and visionary.
Leslie Boyd of Highveld Steel: A Man of Steel and brilliant strategist and
contributor to our sector.
Mendel Kaplan of Cape Gate, whom I first met whilst at university,
for all his wonderful qualities, his contribution to our industry and his
extraordinary commitment to community and philanthropic causes.
Tony Harris of the SCAW Group who, for me, personified the complete
Steelman. He possessed, in abundance, every quality I have referred
to above, and he was as tough as nails and steely-eyed whenever the
moment demanded. He espoused a wonderful team ethic and his
dedication, influence and contribution to our sector are immeasurable.
