It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon !
It is the year of many firsts : It is our first evaluation year on our journey to become an Abbott World Marathon Majors ( AbbottWMM ) event in 2025 . It is the first time that we welcome an elite wheelchair division with some of the world ’ s top wheelchair athletes . It is the first time that runners will take off from the all-new start in Helen Suzman Boulevard …
These firsts were all made possible through months of collaboration , investigation and consultation . And I would therefore like to thank the City in particular for their tireless dedication to helping us meet the AbbottWMM route requirements , for being so solution driven , and for sharing in our vision to showcase our event and our town as worthy candidates to be added to the prestigious AbbottWMM calendar .
For any organising team , the road to the start line is built on a backbone of teamwork and trust , so I also want to thank the extended team for their commitment and passion , and our generous sponsors , partners and stakeholders for their ongoing confidence and trust in our ability to deliver another iconic race .
After two years of pandemic flux , I am so pleased that all our supporting events are also back to create a fully-realised Race Weekend that welcomes participants of all ages , shapes , sizes and fitness levels to the ultimate celebration of running . We are ready to cheer you on from start to finish , and can ’ t wait to celebrate with you .
Please encourage your friends and family to come and cheer on every athlete - from the elite wheelchair athletes taking off at 6am to the backmarkers who will go steady to finish just before the cut-off - and turn the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon into the City ’ s vibiest block party . With careful planning and being mindful of the road closures , it will be possible to show our local , national and international runners the spirit , support and hospitality that the Mother City is famous for .

Western Province Athletics ( WPA ) welcomes all the local , national and international athletes who will be competing in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon .
This is arguably one of the most iconic marathons to be hosted in the Mother City .
To everyone who entered the marathon , may you achieve your personal goal . Even though you might be surrounded by hundreds of other athletes , your overall target is to challenge yourself in reaching your personal best as an athlete .
While we all are grateful and thankful to be able to participate in an event like the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon , let us not forget our loved ones , friends and fellow athletes who lost their lives during the recent pandemic . A pandemic that taught us to appreciate the simple things in life like the opportunity to walk , run , and most of all to respect people no matter what their calling in life is .
