Running with Heart
Every year , Sanlam Cape Town Marathon runners have the opportunity to Run For Something - to use their participation as a fundraising platform for a cause close to their heart .
And since 2018 , over R2.5-million has been raised via the event ’ s official fundraising platform , GivenGain .
While the COVID pandemic continues to rage through the world , mass participation events have slowly started making a comeback and so , too , have the athletes who seek to make a difference in their communities .
Within a short space of time , the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon ’ s GivenGain platform has recorded over R200,000 raised by over 60 runners , in support of over 40 charities .
One of the initiatives to have raised the most funds ( at the time of publication ) is the Cape of Good Hope SPCA - the oldest animal welfare organisation in SA . With over R35,000 raised to date and still going strong , the organisation will be able to continue working hard to prevent cruelty to , and promote the ongoing welfare of domestic and wild animals .
Meanwhile , the event ’ s GivenGain fundraising page leaderboard also shows incredible fundraising efforts , including Warren Kelly - one of the top fundraisers for 2021 . Warren will be running both the Trail and Road Marathon in aid of help2read .
“ I know giving money away isn ’ t easy , especially now when we have our own financial anxieties and the sheer number of people in SA needing help can overwhelm our philanthropic intentions ,” says Warren . “ So I have decided to earn my supporters ’ generosity by running the new trail marathon , followed by the 42km road race the next day .”
“ There are not many things I ’ m certain of in life , but I know that I ’ d be immeasurably worse off without the ability to read . It has made my world more interesting and wonderous , sparked meaningful friendships and conversations , and brought me a sense of calm . Help2read was the obvious choice - not just personally , but also in the context of South Africa and its crisis of education .”
It ’ s not too late : you can still support our fundraising warriors by visiting GivenGain .
