Another area of heavy focus within the strategic plan is early literacy .
“ We are really trying to bridge home and school to attack literacy ,” Edmond says . “ We want our students to be good readers out of second grade into third grade , and we ’ ve made a commitment to that .”
Another point of intense focus is within the system ’ s STEAM ( Science , Technology , Engineering , Arts and Mathematics ) programs . Edmond says an industrial revolution driven by automation requires different cognitive skillsets for students .
“ They have to be independent thinkers . They have to be able to work together . They have to understand the steps to take to problem solve . They have to be futuristic , creative and innovative in how they approach situations no matter what field they decide to go into . Those are the new skillsets that are going to be necessary for our students to be successful in this new 21st Century global economy .”
