The place is nailed in the extreme north of
the one known like «Sierra prieta»; an area
where groups as Seris, Pimas and Yaquis
were looking for refuge, before the advance
of the Spaniards. These majestic mountains
formed reservoirs of water, caves and
refuges, which our ancestors inhabited and
used as sanctuaries and cemeteries.
The more than two thousand cave paintings
have been investigated and compared with
other vestiges and cultures; it is now affirmed
that they are related to the so-called «hunting
magic» or «sympathetic» and «fertility rites».
Some scenes of animals and humans,
artistically drawn in colors yellow, black,
ocher, orange or white; are mostly of mineral
origin, iron oxides and limestone. The art
depicted in «La Pintada» is related to the
proliferation of game, pregnant females,
male animals courting females, and there are
many representations of deer and donkeys,
which should have been its main prey.
The INAH restorer, responsible for the
project, Sandra Cruz Flores, said that the
project has successfully succeeded in
stopping the deterioration of paintings with
serious alterations by graffiti, coupled with the
natural damage of the environment, and that
they are rescuing this marvel that will remain
as pride and heritage for the history of the
man of this world.
