Our workplace core values: Live them. Embrace them. Every day. San Francisco Public Works CORE VALUES Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. As a child, she became an advocate for girls’ education, which resulted in the Taliban issuing a death threat against her. On October 9, 2012, a gunman shot Malala when she was traveling home from school. She survived, and has continued to speak out on the importance of education. In 2014, she became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Our workplace core values: Live them. Embrace them. Every day. Marine Corporal William “Kyle” Carpenter leapt between a live grenade thrown at him and a fellow Marine at their rooftop post in Afghanistan in 2010. His quick, selfless action to use his body as a human shield saved his comrade’s life. Four years later, President Obama awarded him the Medal of Honor. Carpenter, who absorbed the brunt of the explosive power with his body, sustained serious injuries, including the loss of an eye, a shattered jaw and broken arm. He survived, and has since run a marathon, parachuted from planes and is now enrolled in university.
