It turned and I fired, making a perfect spine shot, paralyzing the fish. Swimming to the surface, I noticed my spear had not fully penetrated the fish so I subdued it on the surface. Halii, attracted by the noise of my gun discharging, yelled,‘ You got it. You got the hundred-pounder!’ With those words in mind I held the fish tightly to me as I swam back to the boat.
Hawaii diver Travis Castillon landed an ulua weighing nearly 156 pounds.
I told my dive partner, Olie Shipp, that today was going to be the day that I shoot a 100 pound ulua. I have been fortunate enough to shoot many uluas in my life, but all have been under 100 pounds.
