“ For me , because of so much adrenaline , I was
hyped up and good to go until we hit a bed ,” Dustin
recalled . “ That ’ s when I started to hurt .”
Having suffered a severe concussion , Dustin struggles with memory issues to this day .
Because the base was shutting down , it was three days before the men had access to proper medical facilities . Still after a few days rest , the crew was sent back out on convoys in a replacement truck that Dustin described as significantly less comfortable than the one that had been blown up .
As Dustin was preparing to return to duty , his family back home was just being informed of the incident .
“ They were super vague ,” Brianna said of finally talking to the Red Cross . “ They just said that he had been in an accident and he was alive .… I heard from Red Cross , then it was a full 24 hours
