Living well into old age at Abbeyfield
Saltash
By Thelma Bishop
After my husband died I was left to live in a
very old and dated cottage with only the
spiders to keep me company! The only heating I
had was an open fire place in the lounge which
meant I had to chop the wood and bring in the
coal every day.
In 2008 I used the respite room at the
Abbeyfield House when my cottage was being re-wired.
Whilst I was there I enjoyed the warmth, good food and
company of the other residents. The House Keeper said
there was a room available and after talking through with my
family I decided to stay and sold my cottage.
I am now the oldest resident at Saltash being 98 years. I
can still walk up the stairs and go out shopping weekly with
my carer. I have a lovely room with panoramic views across
to Dartmoor.
Living to this age has meant that I have an extensive family
of 2 children, 4 grand-children, 13 great grand- children and
11 great great grand-children!
