On This Day...
..1980
with Jan Little, Central Coast
Community Radio Coast FM 963
Our Prime Minister was Malcolm Fraser.
Azaria Chamberlain was reported missing at Ayres Rock.
SBS begins transmission in Sydney and Melbourne.
English Band, Queen, had a 6 week No 1 spot in the Sydney Music Charts with
‘Crazy little thing called love.’
And it was the year we lost one of our legends in music, following the fatal
shooting of John Lennon in December, 1980.
One of my favourite people to talk with on CoastFM is local musician, Dennis
Walsh. He is the mastermind and drummer behind Big Band Therapy. Dennis
P 4322 0072
has been a musician since the early 70’s, retiring from teaching in 2000. It was
after the passing of his young daughter that Dennis realised the power of music as
it became his therapy for getting through this dark time. Since then, Dennis
has organised fundraisers for Central Coast Kids in Need, thanking them
for the work they do. It was always his dream to start a big band, thus Big
Band Therapy began about 5 years ago. The band has 16 members, with 4
trumpets, 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, rhythm guitar, bass, piano, drums
and 3 vocalists. With a strong following on the Coast, their last gig at the
Impact Centre, drew over 200 people. I know, when we talk of Big Bands
you think back to the Jazz and Swing Era, but you get all this and more
from Big Band Therapy. You can count on a bit of Motown, some Disco and
maybe even a tune by Queen. Their next local gig: The Anglers Rest,
Brooklyn - 21 Sept, then the Impact Centre, Erina - 1 Nov, 2014.

As a Community Radio Station we try to share the character and cultural diversity that is
our local area, it’s a bit like ‘knitting a cultural blanket’. Therefore, if you have a passion
for World Music, CoastFM is the place to be. It all starts on Sundays at Midday, when
Albert Adam takes a trip around the world introducing music from many Countries in
the Voyager Program.
Alternate Tuesday nights at 7pm, on CoastFM, you can tune in
to ‘African Rhythm and Jive” presented by Carol Palmer.
Carol hails from South Africa and began her program as a way
to introduce Africa to our listeners. As Carol says, “Africa is made up of so many
different people, not just African, it’s a rainbow nation. I always make sure everyone
is represented, the minorities as well as the majorities.” Carol’s program will introduce
you not only to African music, but the people and culture of Africa.
Alternate Thursday evenings at 6pm, travel to Malta with Natalie
Gatt presenting ‘Viva Malta”. Natalie migrated from Malta in
1975, joining CoastFM in 2012. Natalie’s passion is for sharing music which includes both
Maltese and Australian Maltese singers; you will also get some history and community
news, including interviews with prominent Maltese and Australian Maltese who have
made a difference to our community. Natalie Says, “ Malta is a small island of only 122
square miles, the talents that have emerged from such a small island are incredible…I
feel I am an Australian, but, Malta is always in my heart.”
These programs are only a tip of the entertainment available on CoastFM. Join our Big Breakfast Team
each morning from 6am to 9am, where we play the best music of the 60’s to today, with traffic info, local
news on the half hour and Birthday Book at 7.50am. Not in the Birthday Book? Just call our great office
volunteers on 4322 0072 between 9am and 1pm and they will put you in the book. During the month of
July, along with playing the Easymix from 6am – 6pm, we’re featuring the Great American Songbook. From
Ray Charles to the Righteous Brothers, Aretha to Madonna we play them all. August brings the Name Game
feature; we’re sure to have a song with your name in it!
