This project developed a sports-based intervention as an innovative form of disaster response, which incorporates the essential elements of psychosocial care. Initially created to help Physical Education teachers who were survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, 52 of the beneficiaries of the intervention went on to create their own sport-based activities for high school students who were also affected by the super typhoon. Evaluations and analyses of the intervention highlighted the power of sports in teaching life and survival skills in an enjoyable way, as well as the value of teachers’ role as facilitators of sport for disaster recovery. Student participants revealed the importance of friends, fun, and fairness as integral to their positive experience of sports. All data-driven themes from the action plans, focus group discussions and survey responses- connectedness, safety, efficacy, calmness, and hope –corroborate with the essential elements of psychosocial care, supporting the potential of sport as a viable component of disaster response and recovery.
