Transport Solutions & Energy
the hourly operation of the island grids for an entire reference year to find the
cost-optimal hybrid configuration from various combinations of conventional
power sources (e.g. diesel plant), renewable energy sources (e.g. solar
photovoltaic, wind turbine), and energy storage (e.g. batteries). The model
determines the cost-optimal system with the lowest levelized cost of electricity
(LCOE) using typical island energy demands, together with local solar and wind
resource data.
Simulations were conducted for 143 off-grid islands. In 125 of the islands studied,
the utilization of both solar and wind offered the cost-optimal solution. Batteries
also play a key role in increasing the use of solar and wind power without further
increasing the LCOE. The researchers also investigated if it is possible to
combine an energy storage facility with a desalination unit in order to address
another problem faced by small islands: limited freshwater access.
This study is part of an ongoing initiative towards a 100% renewable energy
system for the Philippines.

Various marine markets and industry ecosystems currently suffer from the lack of
Offshore/Ocean/Marine Renewable Energy (ORE) intelligence (data sets, data-
based insight generation) and tools (planning, decision support, operations and
maintenance scheduling) that are needed by stakeholders.
Players typically struggle to find reliable information and are often led to conduct
feasibility studies that require a substantial amount of resources for either in-
house research or consultancy services. Data collection, collation, processing, and
reporting are cost- and time-intensive activities but are necessary to manage and
mitigate risks. Businesses thus need too long a lead time for pre-development, and
other stakeholders do not even have easy access to dataset and tools that assist
them in their tasks.
