Advanced Science & Technology
Utilization of space-borne data for these pressing environmental and societal
problems are also priorities in current research efforts. Machine learning and
artificial intelligence can be used to aid in sifting through the data. Automatic
identification is currently being used to monitor affected areas, sucj as flooded
residential communities, landslide coverage, preventive analysis and risk
assessment of populated areas.
On top of helping meet the demands for on-hand data, utilizing space and the
technologies borne from it also helps our growing societal and nation-building
needs. In the process, not only do we get valuable data; we also build an industrial
base for high value-added activities and innovations, create an enabling
environment for interdisciplinary research and development, and highly trained
researchers, scientists, engineers and workers in the science and technology field.

One major problem in communication is the erasure of data when its carrier, the
electromagnetic wave, hits an obstacle. Telecommunication data such as cellular
services is usually sent through microwave, which when blocked leads to lack of
reception. Information from microscope, carried by visible light, can easily be
distorted when the object being observed is below the surface.
This project devised a way to guide light to enable it to pass an obstacle as though
there is no obstacle in its path. The technique developed by the researchers may
improve existing technology in telecommunication, medical imaging and machine
vision.
The paraxial optical cloak serves as proof-of-concept for future technology.
Further research needs to be conducted in order to determine the broader
opportunities for this innovation.
