training-seminars, assessment, and planning of local barangay units on solid waste
management work.
Regular monitoring and spot inspections are conducted to assess the effectivity of
IEC campaigns and training. If there are irregularities during the inspection, the
team is able to assist the unit to reinforce initial training and implement lessons
learned properly.
While the program focuses on improving the solid waste management activities
of the UP Diliman community, services are also extended to institutions outside
the university. The team has hosted field visits by other universities and colleges,
government agencies, and other institutions (public and private) to the UP
Diliman MRF in order to showcase the team’s activities. DEMO also provides
technical assistance beyond the university as one of the few institutions that
focuses on proper waste management in the Philippines.

The Philippines is surrounded by the ocean and a wealth of marine biodiversity.
Coastal communities throughout the country rely on these resources for food and
livelihood. Yet, many Filipinos are unaware of these marine ecosystems and the
challenges that they now face from exploitation, pollution, and climate change.
Through its extension program, the Bolinao Marine Laboratory (BML), the
research station of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute,
aims to address the urgent need to spread awareness on ocean-related issues and
disseminate science-based information on marine resources and conservation.
The BML works with collaborators from all over the country, as well as
institutions based in Australia, Japan and Israel, among others, on various
research projects. Some of the work done by the BML includes research on algal
