to determine and assess factors that influence the partnership in the context of
inclusivity and how it impacts the smaller enterprises’ profitability and
productivity.
The researchers conducted a survey of two coffee grower groups in Atok,
Benguet that are partnered with different larger coffee enterprises. Key informant
interviews, focus group discussions and workshops were held with respondents
and other coffee industry stakeholders. Secondary data was obtained from studies
on the coffee industry at the macro level and inclusive business design,
application, and practices.
The project showed that there are both merits and drawbacks to partnerships
between small and large coffee enterprises. The IB model may not be impactful to
the smaller enterprise if the partnership’s focus is on a single crop that only allows
harvest once a year. There is also a lack of support programs from the local
government for other livelihood opportunities and the development of other
commodities. Furthermore, an IB model that involves only the private sector may
be impotent as benefits tend to side on the larger enterprise, causing an
imbalance.
This study provides new insights into the IB concept and application including
how it can be developed and improved. It offers points and factors to consider in
developing an IB model that will better address the alleviation of poverty in the
coffee industry.
