Education & Culture The anthology is the inaugural volume of in-depth research into music history. It combines humanities and social sciences approaches to the production of new knowledge to contextualize the country’s music and other forms of modern art within Philippine history, politics and economics. In addition to the essays, the Philippine Modernities project also includes notated sheet music and new recordings of milestone music pieces from the 1800s. A chamber opera from the same era, Diwata ng Bayan, was also re-staged and recorded on video. The project is a major contribution to the teaching of Philippine studies as it provides not only an academic reference, but also audio-visual records of the country’s vibrant cultural past. The project aims to go even further, going beyond nostalgia to popularize the historical works of Philippine musicians through radio and revive interest through educational fora for a new generation of audiences and music students. Gudiño, MFA Visual Communication Department, College of Fine Arts E-mail: [email protected] The Philippines has an abundance of natural resources for making high-quality stoneware clay products. However, stoneware clay production and clay artistry in the country has long been overshadowed by the more popular terracotta. The PAGLULUAL International Ceramic Art Projects were organized to ignite interest in stoneware clay, both in the production of the medium using local raw materials, and in its use for ceramic art. These are events, including a ceramic firing festival and a workshop, conducted between 2015 and 2017 in the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The projects were propelled by and named after the researcher’s creative work, LUAL, a sculptural birthing kiln, built at the grounds of the College of Fine Arts in 2012 and then again in 2015, at the International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth, Wales, United Kingdom. 14 | UP Diliman SALIKSIKHAY
