Social responsibility
Organisational social responsibility addresses the dynamic interactions between the economic, environmental and social impacts and interactions in the short, medium and long term. SALGA strives to achieve this through the incorporation of ethical, transparent, responsible and accountable business practices into its operations and voluntary practices.
International Nelson Mandela day was officially launched in 2009 by the United Nations( UN) General Assembly in recognition of Nelson Mandela’ s birthday on 18 July. This was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier in which he called the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’ s social injustices. SALGA has been inspired to take up this challenge and it has become a tradition for salgans to participant in local projects to honour the call to improve our communities.
In relation to the first and second objectives, SALGA in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation( NMF), visited the Sunrise Secondary School and the Diepsloot High School in Johannesburg where they delivered sanitary towels, books and school bags on Monday 18 July 2016. Prior to the distribution, the executive manager in the OCEO delivered the key message of the day to learners of the Sunrise Secondary School and later, the CEO did the same to learners of the Diepsloot High School. Messages of the SALGA leadership were focussed on encouraging and harnessing leadership among learners, both girls and boys, and at same time, educationally motivating.
The SALGA leadership delivered a message to learners of the Diepsloot Secondary School on the history of the struggle for freedom and the role education played in it, making special references to leaders of the South African struggle and the value they attached to education.
With regard to the third objective, SALGA in partnership with City of Tshwane, NMF and SANTAM, visited the Phomolong settlement to handover 255 smoke detectors to City of Tshwane for distribution to the Phomolong settlement. Smoke detectors were purchased and donated by SANTAM. The same number of smoke detectors was donated by Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces.

The theme of the 2016 / 17 commemoration was:“ Sacrificial contribution for the restoration of dignity”. The theme optimally captures the overall being, character and contribution of the late President Mandela. Further, it is relevant to our context today as it speaks to the consciousness and conscience of the nation in relation to the continuous and incremental uplifting of the disadvantaged. The commemoration at all offices of SALGA was driven by four objectives:
• Purchase and distribution of sanitary towels to young school girls;
• Collection and distribution of books to schools;
• Purchase and distribution of smoke detectors to settlements prone to fire disasters; and
• Sports and recreation.
At the ceremony, at the Phomolong clinic, the Executive Manager in the OCEO delivered the message of hope to communities living in informal settlements especially in relation to local government’ s support to fire prevention in particular and disaster management in general especially in the winter season. A key element of the message included the need to work together in reducing the risk of disasters which often affect the poorest of the poor most severely. The ceremony was also attended by councillors from the City of Tshwane.
With regard to the fourth objective, SALGA donated a full soccer kit and school bags to the Glen High School. SALGA national already has a cordial partnership with the school to support SALGA staff with sports facilities of which SALGA has begun to make use in pursuit of a healthy workforce.
